What IS GIS?
Our mission is to support improved City services through leadership in the creation, maintenance and analysis of geographic information and by facilitating access to that information.
GIS is more than a map, it is a strategic direction. The industry quotes that more than 80% of government decisions have a geographic component. Who does what, when, and where? GIS can provide valuable information to answer the following types of questions:
• Where should we build city facilities to deliver services to our citizens?
• Where should we concentrate our economic development efforts?
• What Ward District am I in based off my address?
• Where are the flood zones? Protected habitats?
• What properties were destroyed by tornado?
• Where should we concentrate law enforcement efforts?
These are just a few examples of questions that GIS can address.
