Smoke
Detectors Save Lives
Installing working smoke detectors in your home will
increase your family’s chances of surviving a fire. Although almost 90% of
American homes have smoke alarms, statistics show that at least 50% of the time
the smoke alarms do not work, which is typically due to dead or missing
batteries.
To safeguard your family against fire you should install a
smoke alarm on each level of your home and outside sleeping areas. For
additional protection, especially in homes with small children, you should
install a smoke alarm in each bedroom.
To insure that the smoke alarms in your home are in working
condition, you should follow three simple steps. First, make sure the battery
works by testing the alarm monthly. Second, change the battery twice a year,
when you change your clock in the spring and fall. Finally, keep the alarm
clean and free of dust and other obstructions by vacuuming it monthly.
