The Allen Myers Jazz Orchestra will co-present a free concert at the Liberty Performing Arts Theatre (LPAT). The two organizations have joined resources to provide a complimentary community event.

In 2007, the Orchestra took 'Very Honorable' mention in the New Musician Showcase, hosted by the LPAT.  Their return to the LPAT stage will feature the music of Count Basie, Henry Mancini, and Duke Ellington - to name a few.

The concert will conclude with a tribute to Coleman Hawkins, Saint Joseph's legendary tenor saxophonist, in the “Body and Soul Suite.”  Mr. Allen composed the suite for a concert in 2009, which honored the 70th anniversary of Hawkins’ famous jazz recording.  However, circumstances surrounding the 2009 concert led to a cancellation of the world premiere.

Now, for the first time, the suite will be heard in its entirety at the LPAT - featuring tenor saxophonist Bud Haley.  Bud is a Liberty regular, having played the past 9 years as part of Corbin Theatre's "Jazz on the Square" the first Monday of each month.

A featured special guest for the evening will be trumpeter Al Pearson. Al has played with the Count Basie Orchestra and backed up many artists over the years (Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath, Jackie McLean, Jay McShann, Claude “Fiddler” Williams, Bobby Watson, Lou Rawls, Debbie Reynolds, Crystal Gale, Stevie Wonder, Four Tops, Smokey Robinson, Sammy Davis Jr., Marvin Gaye, and the Danville Illinois Symphony, to name a few).

Also featured will be vocalist Caitlin Myers, and guest dancers Paco Vitug and Dr. Yvonne Iway Spurlock.

The Orchestra was formed in fall of 2006, by musicians dedicated to the pursuit of performing new jazz music, in the context of a ‘mini big band.’  The repertoire for the group ranges from jazz standards to original compositions.  Since its inception, the orchestra has performed at Zona Rosa, the Elms Resort Wine Festival in Excelsior Springs, William Jewell College, Liberty Public Schools Jazz & Java Night, and a six-month stint at Cupini’s on the historic Liberty square.
